A Hidden City
In 1911, Hiram Bingham went looking for the lost Incan city of Vilcabamba - a mountain city used by those fighting against the Spanish in the 16th century. What he found instead was Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan site high up in the Andes Mountains, about 80 kilometers from Cuzco, Peru. Hiram and other researchers discovered many amazing things there, including ancient artifacts, a temple, a gate, a building for food, and several homes.
They also found the bodies of some of the people who lived there. They studied the bodies to find out more about the lives of the people there, and through their research, they learned that during the 15th and 16th centuries, as many as 1,000 people lived within the walls of Machu Picchu. Most of them, researchers believed, were probably kings or rich people who went to Machu Picchu to get away from the busy Incan capital of Cuzco.
According to research, the city of Machu Picchu was very active for about 100 years. But something happened in the middle of the 16th century that caused people to leave the city. The city was forgotten, and eventually, it became the ruins we see today with grass growing over the buildings and its walls falling apart. No one knows exactly why the people of Machu Picchu left, but Bingham's discovery 400 years later allowed the world to see a little of what Incan life was like.
