The history of this important day goes
back to the eighteenth century when
America was in the Revolutionary War
with Great Britain. They would no longer
be a part of the British Empire and would
fight for their freedom.
On June 11th, 1776, the Continental
Congress appointed five leaders, called
the Committee of Five, to
write a
document explaining why they were
declaring their independence. The five members were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams,
Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas
Jefferson. They presented the
document to Congress on June 28th, 1776.
On July 4th, 1776, the 2nd Continental Congress of The United States approved the
declaration of this day as the Independence Day
of the country. Since then, this day
was celebrated as Independence Day in the country.
