Flavors of the Pacific of Colombia
The Pacific has a great variety of gastronomy that it offers tourists to explore new flavors.
Typical dishes from the Pacific region of Colombia are characterized by having a wide variety of colors, flavors,
and ingredients. The Pacific region is a reference of this. Its typical gastronomy
is made up of the cultural
richness of Africa and the abundance of the Pacific Ocean and its plains
, the richness of the territories and
subregions of the Atrato River Valley and the San Juan River Valley.
In part, the abundant variety of its typical food is due to the strategic location of its territory, which was the
recipient of hundreds of African slaves in the 17th and 18th centuries, taking with it part of the most valuable of
its culture, traditions and forms of life where food plays a fundamental role in their identity.
From generation to generation, women transmit knowledge where the secrets of each recipe are a
fundamental part of their history. The mothers and grandmothers who are dedicated to preserving the
gastronomic culture are called experts in traditional cooking. Many of them learned from childhood with their
sisters, mothers and grandmothers.
During childhood, many of the girls and boys begin to explore traditional cooking, accompanying the elders to
fish, observing the preparation processes and listening to the knowledge shared by the women.
The importance of the Colombian Pacific gastronomy is essential within the identity and cultural practices that
have been consolidated in the different territories of the Colombian Pacific coast, being one of the greatest
attractions for tourists and visitors who seek a different experience during their trip.
