The Webers' circle seemed remarkably free of everyday pressures. They lived
secure
lives, with the heady feeling
that they were citizens of a flourishing,
respected community. However, far
from being sated, they constantly
struggled for greater inner
depth and were always fully aware of how deeply
they were indebted to
those strata of the people who were underpinning
this high-pitched life
with their manual labor. Everyone strove for inner
self-realization or for the completion of his work, and almost every other
person did some writing. Evidently there were too few other forms of expres-
sion and creativity for the store of German intelligence. Some of the wo-
men, too, wrote or created works of art. And in addition to one's own pro-
ductivity there was also time to become absorbed in the writings of one's
friends. Lovely ornamentation surrounded the serious creations. In the fall
of 1912 Weber wrote to Helene:
Yesterday we had the Janus group here. Marianne spoke about Greek
matrimony, well and charmingly with a spirited discussion. Today we are
"at home." The old rooms are surprised after such a long solitude, but
I think they are glad, because this is appropriate for them. On the av-
erage we have one visitor on each of five weekdays. Naturally this takes
away some of my productive strength, but should we give it up?
